The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) WA is the state's leading voice in animal welfare. RSPCA WA is managed locally but works toward the goals of the organisation Australia-wide. On an average day, we employ around 90 staff and we have the support of an amazing group of volunteers. Together, our team works diligently toward preventing animal cruelty.

About this opportunity

The adoption officer role provides front of house customer service to members of the public visiting the RSPCA for general enquiries, retail sales, adoptions and pound reclaims. The role requires you to be compassionate, resilient and willing to assist a diverse clientele at all times. Conducting and completing adoptions requires sound initiative and judgement and the ability to work with and handle a wide range of animals. You need sound computer literacy and retail experience is desirable. 

An Animal Attendant is responsible for the day-to-day care of animals within the animal welfare shelter and pound environment along with overseeing volunteers and students rostered into their area.  This role is also responsible for the provision of assistance to members of the public, volunteers and students with enquiries as required and completing general duties as requested in the shelter. 

This position is a casual role, but permanent opportunities are always provided to casual staff when they become available first. Opportunities to cross skill in different departments, such as behavior, vet clinic, Inspectorate are also offered as development opportunities internally as they become available. Preference is given to experience and suitability. This role is primarily used to cover personal leave taken by permanent staff at short notice, as well as covering pre-booked annual leave on a rostered basis.

Duties

  1. This position predominately provides top quality customer service for all external liaison with the public, including both face to face and over the phone.
  2. All aspects of animal adoptions.  This includes creating profiles, making animals available online, responding to enquiries, meeting potential adopters and providing them with information on available animals, facilitating a meet and greet for people wishing to adopt and using sound judgement to create appropriate matches.
  3. Able to confidently work with a wide variety of animals, specifically including dogs and cats. The role requires you to be able to accurately provide information and appropriately handle the animals so potential adopters can spend time with them prior to adoption.
  4. Offer a full retail service in our pet supply store, including stock take, sales via EFTPOS and ensuring the till is balanced at the end of each day.
  5. Provide information, support and guidance to the general public enquiring about their animals that may have been impounded with us by the Shire Ranger Service
  6. Carry out all animal husbandry tasks including, but not limited to; feeding, cleaning, bedding, bathing, grooming, weighing and all other tasks associated with routine care of animals at RSPCA WA
  7. Identify potential health concerns and or changes in conditions of the animals in our care and report them immediately.

Skills and experience

  1. Candidates must have current animal handling experience. No prior experience will not be considered at this time. Specific experience in a kennel/shelter/vet clinic capacity is desirable. 
  2. Retail experience, specifically in an animal related environment, is preferred.
  3. Basic computer literacy and competency with Microsoft Office programs.
