A 26-year-old Katanning man has received a nine-month community-based order and been banned from owning a dog for three years after being caught savagely attacking his American bulldog, Red.

A member of the public reported seeing a man kicking, punching, choking, and throwing a bottle at a dog outside the Woolworths store on Clive Street in August 2021.

CCTV footage from the area identified the offender as the alleged perpetrator. It showed two-year-old Red cowering, at times crawling towards his attacker while at the same time trying to avoid kicks and punches.

At one point, the offender is seen throwing a bottle at Red then stepping over a bench to stomp on him. The attack went on for five minutes.

An RSPCA inspector attended the offender’s home shortly after the attack was reported and seized Red. He remains in the care of RSPCA WA.

The offender appeared in the Katanning Magistrates Court today where he was convicted under sections 19(1) and 19(2)(a) of the Animal Welfare Act 2002.

Inspector manager Kylie Green said the CCTV footage was difficult to watch.

‘It’s plain to see how scared Red is but, like many dogs, he still wants to do as he’s told and please his owner so comes crawling back,’ Kylie said.

‘This was a blatant and sickening act of violence and a clear abuse of power.

‘There is never an excuse to intentionally hurt an animal and I’m glad we’ve helped get some justice for Red today.’

The RSPCA thanked Katanning Police for their assistance in this case.
