As the custodians of millions of animals, livestock producers will be interested in the recent announcement by the Minister for Agriculture Alannah MacTiernan about plans to review Western Australia’s animal welfare laws.
The Australian Veterinary Association held its annual national conference in Perth in mid-May. A keynote speaker, one of the world’s foremost animal welfare experts – recognised as such by the Australian Government – said long-haul live animal exports are too high a risk and should not take place.
Livestock producers are responsible for looking after millions of animals across Australia. That means producers are a very important group to RSPCA.
Australia’s red meat and livestock research and marketing body, Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), has partnered with some of the country’s leading researchers to undertake a suite of projects focussed on improving animal welfare.
The State Government has released a draft policy paper on proposed Standards and Guidelines for the Health and Welfare of Dogs in Western Australia. It is intended the proposals will apply to all dogs in WA including on farms, whether they are pets or working animals.
The RSPCA is opposed to the use of electric shock collars, or e-collars, on dogs and, their use is prohibited in other Australian jurisdictions including ACT, NSW and South Australia.
“RSPCA WA is extremely concerned about the animal welfare crisis involving cattle unfolding on properties in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions of WA.”
Farmers are angry about the recent spate of farm invasions by animal activists. A dairy farm, intensive piggery and a feedlot have been targeted as well as a cattle sale in progress at Muchea Livestock Centre.
