For most of his life, 10-year-old Dawson had been shut away at the back of his owner's yard. He’d never known the unconditional love of a family, or the warmth of a cuddle on the couch.

Dawson, getting care from RSPCA WA foster carerDawson was reported as abandoned to RSPCA WA in July. When an Inspector attended, Dawson reached his paw over the fence and placed it on her hand, as if to say, “please don’t leave me here”.

The Inspector contacted Dawson’s owner, who said that he worked away, but had a friend dropping by to give Dawson food and water.

The Inspector explained that barely meeting a dog’s most basic needs was not enough to keep him happy and healthy. Dogs need enrichment, exercise and companionship. Thankfully, Dawson’s owner was happy to surrender him into RSPCA’s care so he could find a more suitable home.

At the RSPCA Animal Care Centre in Malaga, Dawson was checked over by vets, who found he needed surgery to remove damaged teeth and a lump on his shoulder, plus treatment for his infected ears. After several weeks of healing, this senior boy was ready for his second chance!

He definitely hit the jackpot with new owner Holly – who has promised to absolutely spoil him for his retirement.
