5 tips on how to have a paw-some Christmas with pets! While it may be the jolliest time of the year for humans, Christmas can be full of unfamiliar people, children and loud celebrations which overwhelm some pets. But don't worry, we have some tips to avoid doggy mishaps and cat-tastrophes. 1. Play before you party Having guests over can be overwhelming for any pet. Make an effort to reduce their stress by playing with them before any guests arrive or events start. Walk your dog earlier in the day if you have celebrations planned and make sure the walk is full of enrichment. When you get home from the walk, have a play so you’re spending some quality time with them. Physical activity and mental enrichment will help ease any stress your pup may be feeling and will help control the chance of zoomies during celebrations. For cat owners, play with your cats with a variety of toys. Make sure you allocate some time to spend with them before any guests arrive. 2. Make sure your pet has a safe space away from the festivities Your pet needs a space that is calm, comfortable and quiet where they feel safe - away from the festivities and people. It could be a crate, kennel, a separate room or even walk-in wardrobe that they are familiar with and that is closed off from the rest of the home. If your dog shows any behaviours that tell you they are uncomfortable such as yawning, lip licking, showing the whites in their eyes, or turning their head away when anybody tries to pat them, step in immediately and guide them to their safe space to relax and recharge. 3. Treat your pets to the right food Christmas is a time for feasts and festivities but be careful what your pets indulge in. Not all human foods are safe for pets. Keep them away from cooked bones, chocolate, fruit mince pies, Christmas pudding and alcohol which are all toxic to dogs. Wrapping paper and decorations can also cause intestinal blockages if swallowed, which would result in a Christmas spent at the vets instead of at home! RSPCA WA Shelter Manager Emily Farrell says that toxic foods and stomach blockages are common occurrences around the holiday season. Everyone deserves a Christmas treat though, so make sure your pet is celebrating with foods that are safe to eat! Whether it's a pet-friendly gingerbread house or Christmas-themed dog biscuits, a baking session where both you and your furry friend can lick the bowl is a perfect holiday activity! Snap a holiday paw-trait Have some fun and make some memories by setting up a festive portrait. Whether you go low-key with a cute snap on the couch, or all-out with a carefully curated backdrop there's no such thing as too many pet pics. To keep your furry or feathered friend in a cooperative mood, set up a place where they feel safe and make the scene as comfy as possible. Practice some cute poses, using treats and toys to reward their hard work. Don't cause extra stress by adding a costume or anything in the scene that will make them feel uncomfortable. Remember, Christmas is supposed to be fun and comfortable! Don't forget to jump in a few shots with your furry companion! Remember to watch for signs of stress like retreating, excessive yawning or lip-licking in dogs and allow them to leave to their safe space if needed. 5. Stuff a stocking If you’re in the mood to really pamper your pet, hang a stocking stuffed full of their favourite things. Sure, your cat will probably like the gift box more than their actual gift, but you’ll be guaranteed a dose of cheer watching them tear into their holiday haul on Christmas morning. Enrichment toys like Kongs, LickiMats or snuffle mats are great for dogs, and cats may love interactive toys, cat nip or puzzle feeders.
