The independent panel reviewing the State’s Animal Welfare Act 2002 will hold public forums soon in Katanning and Perth.

Livestock producers are responsible for the welfare of millions of animals and your views are important in helping to shape the future of WA’s animal welfare legislation. The upcoming forums are an opportunity to get involved.

• Katanning - 31 January, 2020
• Perth - 3 February, 2020

Public forums have already been held in Broome and Karratha.

In May 2019, the Minister for Agriculture and Food, Alannah MacTiernan, appointed the independent panel to review the legislation. The panel is chaired by Perth barrister Linda Black.

RSPCA WA supports the review which the Minister has said aims to assess whether the current Act reflects and promotes best practice animal welfare. It is now almost two decades since the Act has was introduced and we believe there are many ways in which it can be improved, both for the better welfare of animals and to give clearer direction to animal owners and people who are responsible for their welfare.

Information gathered at the forums, along with written submissions from the public which were received last year, will help the panel make recommendations that reflect the community's views as well as contemporary best practice in relation to animal welfare.
