RSPCA WA is investigating a number of reports of apparent poisoning of pets within a 1km radius of the intersection of Strasbourg Ramble and Grand Ocean Blvd in Port Kennedy.

While the investigation continues, we’d like to remind people with pets to keep them on a leash at all times when out walking, and to watch them closely in parks and bushland areas. Also please keep an eye on your pets in your yards.

If you see any suspicious behaviour or find possible baits, please report it immediately to the RSPCA WA Cruelty Hotline on 1300 CRUELTY (278 3589).

It is a criminal offence under Section 19(1) of the Animal Welfare Act (2002) to intentionally or recklessly poison an animal. Those found guilty can face a fine of up to $50,000 or up to five years imprisonment.

Baiting is sometimes carried out to target nuisance or barking dogs. IT IS NEVER OK to target animals in this way. If you have an issue with a barking dog in your neighbourhood, please address it with the dog’s owner directly – they may not be aware that their dog is barking when they’re not home.

If you have dogs at home alone, please ensure that they are provided with enough stimulation and enrichment throughout the day to prevent them from becoming a nuisance.

Things that might help include:

• taking dogs for long walks in the morning or before leaving them alone so they are calm and relaxed;
• leaving toys like kongs for them to play with, and food puzzles to keep them occupied
• ensure your dog is kept in your own property
• use reward-based training to help reduce behaviours such as excessive barking.
