The RSPCA has charged a 41-year-old woman with animal cruelty under section 19(1) of the Animal Welfare Act 2002.

The charge relates to a ginger cat allegedly left locked inside a Langford house without food or water for considerable time.

A WA police officer called the RSPCA in March 2021 to report he had been to the accused’s address and had seen a male cat inside through the window. The cat’s spine, hips and ribs were visible and his eyes sunken.

An RSPCA inspector went to the home and also saw the cat through the window. No food or water could be seen. The window was locked shut. A neighbour told the inspector no one had been at the house for two weeks.

The inspector obtained an emergency warrant to enter the house which she did with the help of a locksmith. Once inside, the inspector found the cat had been locked in a bedroom where there was no food or water, apart from some dry instant noodles.

The inspector seized the cat and took him to Baldivis Vet Hospital where he was found to be dehydrated, with evidence of going a long time without food or water.

The cat was then taken to the RSPCA’s Animal Care Centre in Malaga where he received medical treatment. He remains in the care of the RSPCA. He has recovered with his weight nearly doubling since his rescue.

The RSPCA alleges the cat’s body condition and dehydration were caused as a direct result of the accused’s failure to provide proper and sufficient food and water.

The accused is due to appear in the Fremantle Magistrates Court on 30 July 2021.
