Rabbits hung from barbed wire fence

We are seeking witnesses after Inspectors received a complaint from a member of the public who alleges rabbits were being hung up alive from barbed wire fences in a bush land area in Nowergup, north of Wanneroo.

The area is accessible by 4WD and is often frequented by off-road motorbike and quad riders.

rabbits hung from barbed wire fence When RSPCA Inspectors visited the area , the rabbits were already dead. Nearby residents are claiming this is an on-going occurrence in the area.

"While rabbits are considered an introduced pest species, there are humane control methods for eradicating rabbits, but some methods of killing them are far from humane such as what is suspected of occurring in this instance." RSPCA CEO David van Ooran said.

"These animals are no different from their domestic counterparts, such as pet dogs or cats, in terms of their capacity to suffer and experience pain and fear.

"The RSPCA is reminding people that penalties of up to a $50,000 fine and five year's imprisonment apply for animal cruelty in Western Australia." Mr van Ooran said.
