RSPCA WA receives and investigates reports of animal cruelty and takes a lead role in enforcing animal welfare legislation in Western Australia. When a cruelty report is made it will be assigned to the Inspectorate to follow-up.

To investigate a cruelty report, RSPCA WA requires reasonable grounds to suspect that an animal cruelty offence has been committed under the Animal Welfare Act 2002. We need your contact details, including your full name, in case we need more information. Any personal details you provide to us will remain confidential.

RSPCA WA inspectors investigate over 6000 reports of cruelty every year. Once a report is received, it is assigned to an inspector, and once an investigation is underway, we are unable to update you on the progress of your report. Refer to these FAQs for more details about how your cruelty report will be actioned.

Under s42 (1) of the Animal Welfare Act 2002, RSPCA WA inspectors can only seize an animal if they have reasonable suspicion that a cruelty offence has been, is being or is likely to be, committed in regards to an animal. In some cases, inspectors may prosecute the person or persons responsible.

Your local government is responsible for stray and nuisance animals and noise complaints for barking dogs.

Online cruelty reports are not monitored over weekends or public holidays. If an animal's life is in immediate danger, please call WA Police. Alternatively, you can call the RSPCA Cruelty Hotline on 1300 CRUELTY (1300 278 358) - note that wait times may occur. 

RSPCA WA only has 11 inspectors to cover the whole state, which can limit our response to reports in some instances. If an animal's life is in danger, community members can also contact WA Police who have the same powers to intervene as the RSPCA under the Animal Welfare Act 2002.
